Another charming turn-of-the-century town, Punxsutawney's nostalgic Main Street leads visitors to another era. Beautiful tree-lined Mahoning Street features 'Millionaire's Row', preserved from the days when Punxsutawney was a thriving coal, oil and lumber town.
World renowned weather prognosticator Punxsutawney Phil makes his home here in the children's library of the Mahoning East Civic Center, downtown. For more than a century, the town has embraced Groundhog Day with great pomp and circumstance, paying enormous attention to the four-legged oracle dubbed 'the Seer of Seers'.
Tradition abounds in community celebrations as Phil is honored during the annual summer Groundhog Festival and everyone comes 'Home for the Holidays' during an elaborate award-winning festival which last an entire month.
Just south of Punxsutawney, the beautiful town of Smicksburg, founded in 1827, is home to the largest Amish settlement in western Pennsylvania. The rolling landscape is literally dotted with farms. Fields are still turned by a team of horses and a crude plow, and motorized vehicles share roadways with horses and buggies.
Here you will find an exquisite winery and some of the master craftsmen of the region. Dozens of shops lie at every turn but be advised, because of the strong Mennonite faith, many may not be open for business on Sunday.
